echo agent is a voice assistant that runs on your Mac. Speech is recognized on your Mac. Your requests go to the model provider you configure, using your own API key. We only receive anonymous counts of how often features are used, and only if you allow it.
What stays on your Mac
- Your voice. A speech model on your Mac turns it into text. Recordings are never saved or uploaded.
- Your API keys. Stored in echo agent’s config folder (
~/Library/Application Support/VoiceAgent/agent/auth.json, readable only by your user account) and used only to call the provider you chose. They are never sent to us. - Conversations, background task records and settings. Stored in
~/Library/Application Support/VoiceAgent/. Conversations may include screenshot attachments; these remain with conversation history even after temporary screenshot files are cleaned up. Deleting that folder removes all of them.
What goes to services you choose
- Your model provider. Each request goes to the provider you set up in Settings (for example Anthropic, OpenAI or DeepSeek) with your own API key. So echo agent can understand “this page” or “this project”, the request includes the app in front when you pressed the shortcut: its name, window title, browser address, and open file or project path. Files read while doing a task may also be sent to the model. The provider’s privacy policy applies.
- Codex and Claude Code. When you hand a task to them, echo agent starts the command-line tool you installed, on your Mac, with your own sign-in and settings. OpenAI’s or Anthropic’s terms apply.
- Your Codex and Claude Code history. Read on your Mac only when you ask about it, and passed to your model provider as context.
- Screenshot questions. When you explicitly request a screenshot, echo agent captures the window selected when you invoked the shortcut and sends it to your configured model provider to answer your question. Only when you explicitly ask is it sent through Codex or Claude Code instead. Screenshots are saved under
~/Library/Application Support/VoiceAgent/screenshots/, readable only by your account. On the next capture, screenshots older than 24 hours are deleted unless a running task needs them or a task record still offers a new-session retry after a session conflict. Reporting a result or dismissing its card does not remove that retry option or its image protection. Provider and CLI records follow their own retention settings.
What comes to us
Update checks
echo agent regularly asks our website whether a newer version exists. The request carries only echo agent’s version number. You decide whether to install an update, and you can turn off automatic checks in Settings → About.
Anonymous usage statistics (only with your permission)
echo agent asks you first. Nothing is sent unless you choose “Share”, and you can turn it off at any time in Settings → About. When it is on, echo agent sends only:
- a randomly generated install ID, unrelated to your Mac or any account
- the versions of echo agent and macOS, and echo agent’s interface language
- which days you used echo agent
- daily counts for three things. Voice input: how many recordings started and how each ended (text recognized, no speech, cancelled, error), with the time from release to text grouped as under 1 second, 1–3 seconds or longer. Requests: whether each was spoken or typed, whether echo agent accepted it, and how it ended (completed, error, stopped, interrupted), with completion time grouped as under 10 seconds, 10–60 seconds or longer. Background tasks: for Codex and Claude Code separately, how many were started and how they ended (succeeded, finished with an action denied, failed, interrupted, stopped)
It never includes your voice, what you said or typed, files, web addresses, conversation content, exact timings or your IP address. Turning statistics off deletes the install ID and any unsent counts from your Mac; turning it on again creates a new ID. Because the data is tied only to a random ID, we cannot tell who you are from it.
Feedback
When you use Settings → About → Send Feedback, we receive what you write, the contact details you choose to add, and the versions of echo agent and macOS plus the interface language. If usage statistics are on, the install ID is included too, so we can match the report with how the app was used.
How we keep it
- The data is stored on our servers (Vercel and Neon, Singapore region) and only the maintainers can view it.
- We don’t store IP addresses. To stop feedback spam, the server keeps a digest that changes every day and cannot be turned back into an IP address. Our hosting provider may record requests in short-lived operational logs.
- Usage statistics are kept as daily totals. The batch numbers used to avoid counting a retry twice are deleted after 35 days.
- We don’t sell the data or use it for advertising.
